Working from this zaftig model was a supreme challenge and a real departure from the skinny, waiflike female figures I did from my imagination. Like so many other young women—then and now- I was vulnerable to society’s message that being thin was more beautiful and desirable than a full curvy figure. That way of thinking is a trap, and a hard one to expunge. Perhaps I resonate with this piece because I continue to struggle with a poor body image.
