I began this sculpture after my mother was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. She was in an agitated state a lot of the time due in part to pain, and I believe, her fear of dying. Modeling this peacefully sleeping woman felt like an antidote to my feeling powerless to comfort her while she was alive.
